Religious Education

Intent

At Wellington Primary School, we believe Religious Education has a significant role for the development of pupils’ spiritual, moral, social and cultural development. It promotes respect and open-mindedness towards others with different faiths and beliefs and encourages pupils to develop their sense of identity and belonging through self-awareness and reflection. The principle aim of RE is to engage pupils in an enquiry approach where they can develop an understanding and appreciation for the expression of beliefs, cultural practices and influence of principle religions and worldviews in the local, national and wider global community.

Implementation

At Wellington we follow the West Yorkshire Agreed Syllabus 2024 – Believing and Belonging.

To achieve a broad and balanced curriculum, the syllabus is built around three aims:

  • Investigate the beliefs and practices of religions and other world views.
  • Investigate how religions and other world views address questions of meaning, purpose and value.
  • Investigate how religions and other world views influence morality, identity and diversity.

We teach the 6 world faiths: Christianity, Buddhism, Hinduism, Islam, Judaism and Sikhism. All religions and their communities are treated with respect and sensitivity. We value the links we have between home, school and the local community.

Long-Term Overview:

RE Long Term Plan

Impact

By teaching an effective and diverse R.E. curriculum, children at Wellington will develop an understanding of a range of different faiths and beliefs. Children will value and show sensitivity towards how people live in our own area and the wider world.
